DIY projects to do around the house to increase home value and get the biggest bang for your buck.

We all love to stretch a dollar, right? Using your money wisely can mean the difference between updating a lot of your home vs. overspending on one or two areas.

KITCHEN & BATHROOMS:

Kitchens and bathrooms! We always hear that these are the two areas of any home that everyone focuses on, and it’s true. Whether you’re finally going to put in that main floor powder room or update an existing bathroom, remember to weigh all of your options. Adding an additional bathroom will always create greater value for your home and function over, say, renovating an existing bathroom.

When it comes to your kitchen, remember that this is the heart of your home, so design and plan it in a way that it serves you and complements your lifestyle. There are some great kitchen options available, and you no longer have to break the bank to make your vision a reality. Appliances will also make a world of difference, so if you’ve always wanted that gas range, this is the time to put one in. It’s all about the simpler things in life, especially if you’ll be using them daily.

FRESH PAINT:

I cannot stress this enough: fresh paint goes a long way. Period. It’s super inexpensive and if you have friends and family who care about you, then get them a case of beer or a magnum of wine, blast some music, watch a couple DIY tutorials on how to start, and start rolling your walls.

HARDWARE:

I remember when I purchased my first home, most of the hardware on the doors didn’t match. Some handles were round knobs and others were a lever style, some were polished gold and others were chrome. I went to a big box store and purchased all new matching hardware and spent a few hours changing everything out. Another small detail that is often overlooked when it comes to doors are the hinges! It’s a huge pet peeve of mine when hinges get painted over, and this was also the case with my first home. I replaced every hinge myself ($2 a piece – super inexpensive) and I cannot stress the satisfaction and overall joy this brought to my soul!

LIGHT FIXTURES:

Another simple fix is to go around your home and swap out some light fixtures. You do not have to break the bank or shop at big box retailers. You can look online and add some individuality and character to your home. This is, again, a very simple and inexpensive way to enhance the look and feel of any room in your home.

Always keep in mind that you can take all of this in stride. Tackle a single project at a time, pick to do a bathroom one year/season, or do the kitchen. Start small and work your way up as you plan and budget for the bigger ticket items.
