Footballer Danny Mills has played for his country and some of the top clubs in the land, and now he's joined the ASBAH team and is a keen supporter and vice president of the organisation.
Back in 2002 Danny's wife was expecting their 3rd child, but when Lisa went for her 20 week pregnancy scan they were given the heartbreaking news that their unborn baby, whom they called Archie, had severe spina bifida and hydrocephalus and would be unlikely to survive.
Danny said "When we found out about Archie we didn't know what to do or whom to turn to for support and advice. We didn't know about ASBAH and that they could provide experienced advisers to talk to and find out all the information we needed."
Once Danny found out about ASBAH he wanted other families in the same difficult situation to know where to turn for help, by raising awareness of the charity as well as kick-starting fundraising for a new helpline.
Since then Danny's involvement with ASBAH has been wide ranging; from backing our fundraising and awareness campaigns to personal appearances at ASBAH events and heading up golfing days, bringing in much needed funds to help with all aspects of ASBAH'S work.
One of the more unusual things Danny was asked to help with was getting a premiership shirt specially made for a young fan with hydrocephalus. Young Michael Jones desperately wanted a replica shirt, but due to his hydrocephalus he couldn't wear an 'off the peg' shirt because he couldn't get it over his head. Danny came to the rescue, getting a shirt specially made, and you can imagine how thrilled Michael was.
More recently, Danny was part of the ASBAH team at the SEB Bank's mammoth
fundraiser at Bisley Shooting Ground. SEB Bank had chosen ASBAH as its charity of the year and the sole beneficiary of this year's annual clay pigeon shooting event. Danny spoke to the 400 strong audience at the after-shoot dinner and his personal experience left them in no doubt about the value of ASBAH'S work, and surely helped to swell the generous bids at the auction that evening.
Danny continues to work closely with ASBAH and is a fantastic ambassador for the charity; we are delighted that he has recently agreed to become our vice president.
