ASBAH’s Research Commitment

The Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (ASBAH) promotes and supports research into the causes, effects, treatments and prevention of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.

For almost 40 years we've funded research projects and initiatives which have led to significant improvements in the understanding of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. This has been essential to our work to promote individual choice, control and quality of life for people with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. The types of research include:

1. Grants for Research Projects
In response to applications from individual researchers, our professional advisory committees in health and education recommend funding for a number of new stand-alone projects each year.

2. Commissioned Research
Occasionally we commission and fund our own projects by inviting research submissions on topics of key importance to us.

3. Fellowships
We are sometimes able to award a research fellowship to enable a researcher to pursue an important topic for an agreed period, which is funded by a special endowment. This work is carried out by doctors, biologists, geneticists and other professionals in the medical field.

4. Partnerships
We also welcome partnerships with funding bodies from the voluntary, statutory or private sector, as well as co-operating with other organisations wishing to carry out or fund research into Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.
